ISB Faculty & Staff
Social Justice and Anti-Racism in the Classroom
We all need to return to better.
Following ISB's commitment to providing expert facilitation support in extending our current work to create a more comprehensive social justice programme, we were delighted to welcome Mr. Cornelius Minor to lead a conversation about Social Justice and Anti-racism during our Professional Development Days.
Mr. Cornelius Minor is an educator who works with teachers, school leaders, and leaders of community-based organizations to support equitable literacy reform in cities across the globe. Under his moderation, ISB Faculty and Staff members had the opportunity to reflect on how policies and systems in place may lead to consequences for minority groups.
“ We started this year with a commitment to work towards incorporating social justice and anti-racism more thoroughly into our curriculum and our school culture. The curriculum work also coincides with a review of our Social Sciences curriculum across the school. We also stated that there would be opportunities to ‘opt-in’ to the development side of this work.Naturally, as we work to implement the curriculum and to transform school culture more broadly, it will necessarily involve everyone.”
Gordon Eldrige, Director of Curriculum and Professional Development at ISB.
While social justice has been an essential component of ISB’s core academic programme and personal learning for many years, the reality is that in the past 10 months conversations around this theme have shaped our main priorities for this school year. Key learning moments highlights
Movement is an essential component of learning, and embracing discomfort allows us to move forward.
Anti-Opressive work is incomplete if it only includes anti-racism
Racism is systemic, embeded in the policies and leads to consequences to people that suffer them.

“The ‘normal’ we knew [before] left far too many people in the margins. People talk as if that was a ‘Golden Age.’ It wasn’t. I do not want to return to ‘normal’; I want to return to ‘better.’
